There is a significant body of research showing that the politics of Austerity caused the highly preventable deaths of thousands of people.
According to a study in published in 2022, over 335,000 excess deaths in the UK between 2012 and 2019 can be attributed to spending cuts on public services and benefits.
Saying them out loud would take 140 hours (or 6 days).
Our Vigil will last 7 days.
6 for the victims of austerity, 1 for victims still to come.
The rights and lives of disabled people are once again under threat by short-sighted government spending cuts. The proposed changes in the government's "Pathways to Work" Green Paper will push an estimated 250,000 - 400,000 more people into poverty. For disabled people already living in poverty, we risk destitution, homelessness and death.
Join us in lighting a candle to remember those lives lost during Austerity.
And as a promise to protect disabled people from it happening again.
